The story (as written at the end of 2020):

Scapa Special was the first beer Rob brewed at Swannay and in normal times is the one we make the most of. Most pubs in Orkney have Scapa Special on hand pump and in the summer months some sell 100s of pints per week - to locals and visitors alike.

For the first time ever in our history, in 2020 we had to brew a half batch brew size of Scapa Special to balance up the reduced demand and our requirement for stock freshness.

The demand did not dry up completely and some Orkney pubs have managed to take a regular weekly delivery for most of the year. Some south pubs have helped us too but the total litres brewed of our flagship pale ale dropped to their lowest level for a long, long time.

Here are 11 bottles and nucleated Scapa Special pint glass to drink it with.

ORDERS PLACED FROM 25 NOVEMBER 2025 ONWARDS WILL BE DISPATCHED ON MONDAY 15 DECEMBER 2025 FOR DELIVERY IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS.

Filled with beer containing live yeast for a soft, natural carbonation (not as "fizzy" as bottled or canned beer).

Store warm before opening to increase condition. Store cold/cool (depending on your preference) for drinking.

Allow to settle for at least 24 hours before drinking - to ensure beer is as clear as possible.

Drink within 3 days of opening.

Available beers will change often - depending on what's brewing in the brewery - check back often, keep an eye on social media, or message us to find out when your favorite beer will be available.

The dark beers we make are some of our best. We think our kit, specific Orkney water and house yeast lend themselves to making particularly good dark beers.

Tours for 2026

The first tours are available from the 18 April 2026 on a Saturday or Sunday at 1pm and the tours end on the 30 September 2026. For the tour to proceed, we require a minimum of four adult participants. If this number isn’t met then we’ll be happy to offer you a free date change or a full refund.  The brewery tours are bookable online or in the taproom for 1 to 9 people. For groups larger than 9 , please contact us directly on 01856721700 or at cheers@swannaybrewery.com to book.

Children under 10 are free of charge, please let us know if you are bringing any children by calling 01856 721700 or emailing cheers@swannaybrewery.com. 

The brewery is completely level access so the tour is suitable for all, but please advise us if you need any assistance while you are at the brewery.

Bookings must be made 7 days before the tour. Cancellation must be made 3 days prior to avoid charge.  

Christmas Tours 2025

This Christmas we are offering a Pie, Pint & Brewery Tour for £20 per person. There is a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 20 and please email cheers@swannaybrewery.com or call 01856721700 with any questions or to make a booking. 

The tour takes about 20 to 30 minutes and included is a pint (for over 18s only) or a soft drink.
